Kaleidescape isn’t a NAS with movies loaded onto it — it’s a licensed download store, direct from major Hollywood studios, delivering full-bitrate 4K HDR files at up to 800Mbps (a feature film in roughly 10 minutes on gigabit) to a Terra server, played back bit-perfect through a Strato player. Nothing is re-encoded or compressed in the chain, which is the entire reason reference cinemas specify it over a streaming service or a personal media library.
Streaming services compress video and audio to manage bandwidth; Kaleidescape’s entire business model is built around not doing that. For a private cinema where every other component — projector, processor, speakers — has been specified for reference-grade output, feeding it a compressed stream defeats the purpose. Streaming services compress video and audio to manage bandwidth over the internet; a personal ripped-media server depends on the quality of the original disc and the ripping process. Kaleidescape downloads full-bitrate, studio-licensed files directly from the same masters cinemas use, stored losslessly and played back bit-perfect — no re-encoding at any stage.
